Warsmith's Words: Iron Warrior Relics

Welcome back to the Vault! Octoberfest beckons and I'm going to have to nail my list down. I think I've got the guts of the units selected and painted and I'm now fretting over the last few points and deciding if I want to invest any of my precious CP in Relics for my forces.

I thought it would be useful to do a review of the available Relics in a similar manner to the previous Warlord Traits post to help me narrow down my selections.

Warsmith's Words: Iron Warrior Warlord Traits

Welcome back to the Vault! My hobby time this week has been spent painting the Iron Warriors Terminators. I've almost completed the base coats and am looking forward to getting onto the washes and shading.

Octoberfest is a little over a month away and whilst the rules pack hasn't been published yet I do know the basics:

  • 1500 points
  • Tempest of War Missions
  • Nephilim Command Point rules

The last of these will be a challenge for me as I do like to spend some pre-game CP on Relics and Warlord Traits and these are curtailed under the Nephilim rules. Even the normally free first Warlord Trait and Relics cost CP (1 each), and you only start with 6 as opposed to the normal 12!

Let's have a look at the Warlord Traits available to the Iron Warriors and see if there are any worth investing our precious CP on!

Warsmith's Words: Legionary Ramblings

Welcome back to the Vault! The recent weather has been far too warm for painting models, but I have been spending some time assembling some models. If they are built I can play them, even if it's with committing the cardinal sin of unpainted models!

I've also had two games with the mighty Iron Warriors of the IV Legion. There's a lot to learn with a new codex, but I'm enjoying the army so far. My initial lists have centred around what's painted as opposed to what's competitive, but I'll change up the lists as I get more confident with the army.

I have four(!) units of Legionaries painted up; a lot of lists and reviews I've been reading about on the web seem to be minimising Troop choices and prioritising the cheaper Cultists, but I've got a definite lean towards the Power Armoured Spiky Boys as they are the iconic unit for the faction! (Besides if I want to run loads of chaff infantry I'll play my Guard).

Tales from Titan: Downsizing

Welcome back to the Vault! I played a 1500 point game of 40K with my Grey Knights on Friday against the new Eldar. And got utterly battered. It was an enjoyable game but I made a lot of mistakes, starting before the game with poor secondary choices, continuing in deployment and then right through the game.

There were some poor dice rolls (at one point we worked out I'd done more wounds to myself via Perils than I'd caused to my opponent's forces), but ultimately I played like a muppet. Back to Initiate training for me!

Tales from Titan: The Casual Serious RTT

Welcome back to the Vault! I'm taking the opportunity to write this post whilst recovering from an epic weekend of Warhammer 40,000. Saturday afternoon was spent finishing the Interceptor squad and printing lists, etc. in advance of Sunday's event; the Casual Serious Rogue Trader Tournament (RTT) in Horsell, Surrey.

I was very lucky to be invited to attend this tournament; this was the inaugural Casual Serious event and the organisers were using the day as a "beta test" for future tournaments. There were 9 players (Lyle and Dean the organisers alternating as the "odd man"), some of whom I knew from First Founding, and others were new faces! It's always great to meet and play different opponents.

Pestilential Painting: Secondary Objectives

Welcome back to the Vectorium! This weekend I've played my third(!) game with the Death Guard, this time against James's Death Watch Space Marines. I'm starting to get to grips with the Death Guard rules, and I'm now thinking about how Secondary Objectives affect my army.

Secondary Objectives are a great addition to the 9th edition missions; each game you pick 3 secondaries from a list and you can score up to 15 Victory Points in each. However! (Of course there's a However) Not every Secondary is suitable for every army, and every opponent. I thought it would be useful to go through the list of Secondaries, and how useful they are for my 1K list.

Circle of Wildfire Guide

Welcome back to the Vault! I’ve mentioned in previous posts that I am currently playing a Circle of Wildfire Druid in a weekly Dungeons and Dragons 5E campaign, and I thought it would be fun to write a guide as to why and how I’m playing the character (primarily from a rules/mechanics point of view). I’m by no means stating this is the only way, or best way to play the spec, but rather how I’m using the options available to me.

I’m also not going to debate the merits of the Circle compared to the other Druid subclasses available; there are some good guides out there, and I’m assuming you are comfortable with the decision to play Wildfire. I’m also not getting into the whole “Unearthed Arcana version” vs “Tasha version” debate; Tasha’s is what we have as the final published version, and there’s no point crying over spilt milk.

Thematically a Wildfire Druid understands the natural cycle whereby destruction can be the precursor of creation; a forest fire can destroy existing vegetation yet also promotes later growth. This idea sits well with my character, Immerel, who having seen his previous home destroyed is now contemplating the health of the land in a more holistic manner (I’ve taken the option to re-spec from Circle of the Land to Circle of Wildfire).

Tales from Titan: Strike Two!

Welcome back to the Vault my fellow Brother Captains. Today's post is something of a "lessons learnt" piece. I recently played a game of 40K against Lyle, a fellow First Founding club member's Emperors Children list with my old school Tau force. The Fish are not something I've blogged about before; they are an Ebay rescue which need a lot of TLC applied before I'd share photos of them on the Vault.

However we decided to veer away from our usual armies (Lyle is very accomplished Ad Mech Tech Priest) for a different game. How is this relevant to Grey Knights? A good question! My current GK list is very Elite, featuring 4 Terminator Squads, and so playing a Tau list with multiple cheap infantry squads allowed me to try some of the action based mission Secondary objectives.

I've shied away from the action Secondaries as my Terminator squads need to be shooting, casting rather than Raising Banners and so on. However for the price of one Termie squad I can get 2 squads of Strike Marines, and making this one simple swap opens up some interesting opportunities.

Tales from Titan: Warp Shaping

Hail fellow Brother Captains and welcome back to the Vault! This week I've played a game of 40K against James's Deathwatch force resulting in a narrow defeat for the Grey Knights. It was great fun, and I learnt more subtleties of playing the elite Sons of Titan.

In particular the Warp Tides are key to successful play, and understanding when to change the Tide (or not) is an important skill. In this post I'll recap the Tides (and some thoughts on when to use them).

Tales from Titan: A Grey Knights Psychic Phase Primer (Part Two)

Welcome back to the Vault once more!  Today's post is the second part of my primer to the Grey Knights Psychic Phase. You can find the part one here, where we discussed the probabilities involved in casting the various psychic powers; now we'll talk about the powers themselves.

Please note, like a lot of information on the internet this post contains opinion; your opinions of the powers may be different and you are encouraged to garner your own experience from the table top. Nothing beats playing the game!

Tales from Titan: A Grey Knights Psychic Phase Primer (Part One)

Welcome back to the Vault my fellow Grand Masters and Brother Captains. I'm continuing my exploration of the Grey Knights and how to play them in the new 9th edition.  The Grey Knights are unique among my armies in that they have a lot of Psykers available (pretty much every unit can cast a power), and there are Relics and Stratagems which can modify the psychic casting dice rolls. I've found this to be a bit intimidating and confusing, so I thought I'd write a primer to help myself (and hopefully other Grey Knight players) out.

In this post I will be focusing on the likelihood of casting powers, rather than the powers themselves. I will cover the powers in a future post.

Tales from Titan: First Grey Knights 9th Edition List

Welcome to back to the Vault fellow Grand Masters! The weather this week has been glorious but detrimental to painting; i.e. far too hot! Undaunted however I have played another "Learning 9th edition" game with Dave G, and I decided to bring the Grey Knights out for a spin across the table top.

This will be something of a rambling post as it will give me an opportunity to capture some thoughts and good ideas for future games. I hope you might get some benefit from the thoughts as well.

Tales from Titan: Scratching beneath the surface

Welcome back to the Vault! I've had a productive hobby session this week working on my Van Saar gang in advance of the club's Necromunda campaign and continuing to slap paint on the pile of unpainted fantasy monsters.

I've also been digging deeper into the Grey Knights rules in the Ritual of the Damned supplement, and I'm quite excited by some of the tricks on offer!  Let's have a look at some of the tricks I've spotted.

Power Armoured Paint: The Report Card

Welcome back to the Vault my fellow Frater.  The First Founding Doubles Tournament feels like a long time ago, even though it's only been a week, and I've been thinking a lot about what worked well, and not so well, within my list.  I'd like to expand on the list for Mayhem, so it's worth writing a school report for the various units to see if they get benched for future events.

Maelstrom of War 2019: First thoughts

A belated and brief post this week; my Carcharodons Astra faced off against Duncan's Space Wolves in a Chapter Approved 2019 Maelstrom of War Mission called Confined Command.  This mission uses the new CA19 Maelstrom of War deck construction rules, and they are very intriguing.

In summary, once you have seen your opponents roster you construct a tailored Objectives deck with a minimum of 18 unique cards.  At a simplistic level this means if your opponent doesn't have any Psykers you don't need to include Witch Hunter for example.

Power Armoured Paint: In Solitary Contemplation

Hail and welcome my fellow Frater; it's time to enter the Vault once again.  This week I've played a doubles 40K game as the Space Sharks partnered with James's Deathwatch in a training exercise against Dave's Emperor's Spears and Duncan's Space Wolves.

I played a variation on my Carcharodons list and thought it would be useful to capture some notes on the good, and the not so good for future games (my memory is fairly flaky if I'm honest).

James has a Battalion chock full of Veterans and Primaris Marines wielding fearsome anti infantry weaponry, and so I decided to complement his list with a bit more longer range shooting power and dedicated Anti Tank.  This meant leaving the Hellblasters at home and bringing the Lascannon Devestators out to play.

Power Armoured Paint: The Raven's Blade

Welcome to the Vault once again dear Frater.  With Octoberfest disappearing in the rear view mirror I'm looking forward to First Founding's Doubles tournament in the new year.  I've picked up the Space Marines Codex and Raven Guard Supplement and just had my mind blown by the number of cool tricks and options available to my Carcharodons Astra (who I play as Raven Guard Successors).

My aim is to paint a 1000 point principally Primaris-infantry based force for the event, and I want to get plenty of practice games in before the day to refine the army selection.

Regimental Reporting: Prior Proper Preparation Prevents Pretty Poor Performance

Ahem.  I may have word smith'ed the age old 7Ps military adage for a more friendly version, but it's very true and applies to many situations, 40K included.

Unless you are hiding in the 40K equivalent of a shack in a swamp, you'll no doubt be aware that there has been a new Space Marine codex released.  It's a great book, and a lot of my gaming circle are furiously writing army lists and working out all the fantastic combinations.  I'll do this in due course for *my* Space Marine armies, but for the moment I'm focusing on playing the glorious Cadian 82nd Imperial Guard and killing the afore-mentioned power-armoured warriors.

Pro Tip Number 1: Plasma is still your friend.

Regimental Reporting: Learning From Experience

Time for another well earned visit to the Officers Mess my fellow Commanders.  I've played a few more games with the Cadian 82nd and I thought I'd re-visit my earlier After Action post to add more meat to the bone with regard to lessons learned.

The 40K games have gone well with a number of wins under my belt. However in other gaming news, I have been soundly thrashed in a series of hands of Bananagrams by my family.  Undaunted by the experience I've stolen the Bananagrams tiles and hidden them from the kids. That'll teach em.

And hopefully the following Bananagram-inspired pictures will help me remember useful stuff in future 40K games!

Scrabble Score: 14

Regimental Reporting: Cadia Rises Defiant!

Welcome back to the Officer's Mess! I've been enjoying the lazy Bank Holiday weekend, and that's meant plenty of time to get some games of 40K played. Friday evening started with a slug fest between the Deathwatch and Dave R's completely ridiculous Nemesis Dreadknight / Bane Hammer mash up in which pretty much everything died, followed by a much smaller 1K game where the Cadian 82nd faced off against Paul's Salamander Successors.
