So here is the GW Magewrath Throne, aka the Skull Throne!
This model was a lot of fun to paint; whilst the majority of surface is grey stone work, there are plenty of other textures to explore.
The focal point is the throne itself which started with the black to light grey transition used on the rest of the model. The red is Fleshtearer contrast applied over the top, whilst the skulls have been washed with Skeleton Horde. I really like the finish on the skulls over the grey.
The gold is Retributor Armour washed with Skeleton Horde.
Astute readers will have noted that that the Griffin statues are missing from the picture above. I didn't glue the throne or statues to increase the versatility of the pieces. Here is the dais with a Frostgrave cultist for scale:
The Griffins have been based on some scraps of plasticard hanging around the painting desk, cut to fit the side platforms.
The Magewrath Throne is perfectly respectable terrain piece in it's own right, but in keeping with my recent posts I'd like to add some uses for Frostgrave. Here are some sample rules which you can add to an existing scenario (bonus nerd points to anyone who can point out the inspiration in the comments below).
The Throne of Thanatar
The Thanatari are a secretive and despised sect of head hunting necromancers. Famed and feared among their magics is their ritual to bind a spellcaster's spirit to their skull so that the necromancer can coerce the doomed mage into performing spells on their behalf like a ghoulish magic wand or scroll!
In the ruins of Felstad the adventurers have discovered the Throne of Thanatar where dozens of such victims have been heaped into a horrible seat of power for the High Priest of the cult.
During setup place the Magewrath Throne model at the centre of the table. Each of the Griffin models are treated as indestructible inanimate objects until a warband member moves within 12" of the Magewrath throne. At this point the two Griffins animate and are treated as Large Constructs for the remainder of the game.
If a Wizard is within 1" of the Throne itself the controlling player may spend an action to coerce the bound skulls to impart their secrets. If the the Wizard is active at the end of the game then roll on the Grimoire table; the Wizard learns the spell rolled if he does not already know that spell.
The secrets of the Magewrath Throne may only be discovered by one Wizard in this way.
I hope you've enjoyed the pictures and suggested rules. Let me know if you try them out in the comments below. And as always thanks for taking the time to visit the Vault!
